About WTC

History

Educational institutions played an important role in imparting the Gospel of Jesus Christ and in spreading Christianity among the Tangkhul. Most importantly, it produced many capable home-grown Christian and Church leaders, allowing the locals to participate and contribute in furthering the cause of the Kingdom of God not only in Ukhrul but the whole of Manipur. In 1952, a Bible School was established in Ukhrul to continue the mission of training and providing leadership to local churches. However, after more than a decade, the vernacular Bible school was discontinued in favour of more advanced training in theological colleges/seminaries outside Ukhrul and Manipur. Since then, many of the Tangkhul who felt the calling of God had to go outside the Land of Wung for theological studies.

Although the need for and the idea or vision of establishing a theological college has been there for a long time, it has not been realized for many years owing to various practical reasons. The year 2015 proved to be a significant year as a chain of serious meetings and consultations were held to make the vision of establishing a theological college run by the Tangkhul churches a reality. The participants in the meetings and consultations involved academicians from both theological and secular fields, pastors, government officers, head of institutions and organizations and association leaders.

Various committees like the Planning Committee, Finance Committee and the Board of Governors, were also instituted to carry out the plan. As a result, the foundation stone of the college was laid on March 9th, 2018 at the Mission Compound. A trust in the USA for the college has also been established to connect with the well-wishers of the college and theological colleges in the USA. The initial plan was to begin the college in 2021, but due to the pandemic, the plan was shelved. By the Grace of God and with the prayer and support of the church members, the Wung Theological College (WTC) began its historic journey on July 22, 2022.

WTC is the first of its kind in Ukhrul, as it is sponsored and managed by Tangkhul Baptist Churches Association (TBCA). The College seeks to impart quality theological education that is biblically sound and contextually relevant to the local contexts. The college is about preparing committed men and women for the service of God and to provide effective leadership in service to the church and the society.
